Paramount, a global leader in aerospace and defence technology, has announced the delivery of its Maatla 4×4 Light Protected Multi-Mission Border Patrol Vehicle to the Ghanaian Ministry of Interior. The handover took place during the African Aerospace and Defence Expo (AAD 2024).
The Maatla LPV, which translates to “Power” in Setswana, is designed to bolster Ghana’s border patrol and defence operations. This delivery aligns with the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to enhance national security amidst rising threats within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Deon Grobler, CEO of Paramount Land Systems, highlighted the vehicle’s versatility: “The Maatla LPV offers advanced features and reconfigurability, making it the ultimate solution for internal security and border patrol operations. Its ‘Smart Floor’ technology allows for quick adaptation to various missions, including policing, ambulance services, command and control, military support, and peacekeeping.”
Already operational in two African countries, the Maatla meets the growing global demand for lightweight, cost-effective armoured vehicles. It offers advanced capabilities and field reconfigurability, making it an attractive option for nations seeking modern security solutions without the high costs associated with heavier armoured platforms.
At least 12 Maatla APC were acquired by the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2022 in a contract signed the previous year.
Last September, Paramount Land Systems, a subsidiary of aerospace and technology company Paramount Group, revealed that it received two orders totalling 50 units of its Maatla 4×4 light protected vehicle (LPV) during the African Aerospace and Defence Expo 2022, that was held from September 21 to 23.
Paramount’s commitment to supporting African nations is evident in its delivery of the Maatla, which leverages the latest in armoured vehicle technology to enhance operational effectiveness. The vehicle provides all-round STANAG Level 1 ballistic protection, with options for scalable armour upgrades, ensuring unparalleled safety for up to eight personnel in challenging environments.
Powered by a high-performance engine, the Maatla offers exceptional mobility on and off-road. It features a 2-speed transfer case and three differential locks, enabling rapid deployment in both rugged and urban terrains. The vehicle can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h, with a cruising range of 600 km at 80 km/h, and can ford depths of up to 750 mm without preparation. It operates effectively in extreme temperatures ranging from -10°C to +55°C.
Grobler added, “We are pleased to announce that deliveries of our advanced Maatla armoured personnel carrier are underway to the Ministry of Interior of Ghana. Our partners in Ghana and across Africa benefit from three decades of armoured vehicle innovation and engineering excellence, embodied by the multi-mission Maatla. This best-in-class LPV is designed to meet the challenges faced by modern border security forces.”
The introduction of the Maatla LPV marks a significant step in strengthening Ghana’s national security and enhancing the capabilities of its border patrol forces.
