Yakovlev Unveils Yak-130M: A Modernized Combat Trainer Aircraft

At the recent International Military-Technical Forum “ARMY-2024,” PJSC Yakovlev, a subsidiary of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) from Rostec, introduced the Yak-130M—an advanced version of the Yak-130 light combat aircraft.

This new model was developed with the goal of expanding its combat capabilities and enhancing its competitiveness in the international market.

“We expect that the modernized Yak-130M will arouse the interest, first of all, of our foreign partners who do not plan to purchase heavier and more expensive aircraft. The ideas embodied in the upgraded machine will significantly expand armament payload compared to the basic Yak-130. In particular, it will additionally include air-to-air missiles and high-precision air-to-ground aircraft weapons with satellite and laser guidance systems. In fact, the aircraft will become a full-fledged light fighter, while maintaining training functions,” said Vladimir Artyakov, Deputy General Director of Rostec State Corporation.

The development of design documentation for the manufacture of prototypes has already been completed as part of the R&D, commissioned by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.

“We have already started assembling the prototype Yak-130M at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant. In total, the plan is to build three prototypes. Part of technical solutions for the Yak-130M program are practiced on existing prototypes, including the aircraft presented at the forum “ARMY-2024″,” said Andrey Boginskiy, General Director of Yakovlev PJSC.

The Yak-130M aircraft is equipped with systems that significantly increase its capabilities: the 130R airborne radar unit; the SOLT-130K optical locator station; the “President-S130” on-board defense suite, the KSS-130 on-bord communications unit.

Modern equipment and armament will provide the use of Yak-130M aircraft for training and combat purposes around the clock and in adverse weather conditions.

Key Features and Upgrades

  1. Enhanced Armament Options:
The Yak-130M’s updates include significant expansions in its armament options compared to the original Yak-130. Specifically, the upgraded aircraft now features:
  1. Dual-Purpose Design:
The Yak-130M is designed to serve a dual purpose. While it retains its primary role as a training aircraft, it also functions as a light fighter. This versatility makes it attractive to countries seeking an alternative to heavier combat aircraft.
  2. Prototype Production:
The development of the Yak-130M has reached a critical phase. Design documentation for prototype production has been completed as part of the R&D commissioned by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. The assembly of experimental Yak-130M units has already begun at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, with plans to build three prototypes for comprehensive testing.
  3. Advanced Systems:
The Yak-130M incorporates modern systems that enhance its operational capabilities:
