Kenya and Somalia have signed a cooperation agreement in the field of defence.
According to reports in the Kenyan press, Kenyan Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Somalia Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ahmed Muallim Fiqi met in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.
In the statement made after the meeting, it was stated that a cooperation agreement was signed between the two countries in the fields of defence, health and education.
Drawing attention to the cooperation between the two countries, Mudavadi pointed out that Kenya not only shares a common border with Somalia, but also has very special relations due to their strong and lasting partnerships.
Fiqi also said that both countries are making capacity building efforts by improving cooperation in security areas and increasing the skills and training of healthcare workers.
Somalia severed all diplomatic ties with its neighbor Kenya in 2020, accusing it of interfering in its internal affairs and violating its territorial integrity.
Relations between the two countries deteriorated following the maritime border dispute in the Indian Ocean, where there are rich oil and gas deposits.
The Mogadishu government had accused Kenya of interfering in political issues in some states in Somalia.
Somalia and Kenya decided to repair relations in July 2022, leaving behind the long-term political and diplomatic crises in relations, and reopened the closed border gates in 2023.
