Egyptian Navy Shipyard (ENSY) is constructing sixteen new 28 meters coastal patrol boats in conjunction with United States’ Swiftships.
The construction of 28-meter costal patrol crafts (CPC28) is ongoing at the Egyptian Naval shipyard, with the Egyptian Navy’s total requirement for 50 vessels.
Egypt, Swiftships are co-producing the 28-meter costal patrol craft (CPC28) as part of a contract reached in early 2022.
Swiftships’ 28 Meter Patrol Boat is designed for multiple roles, including coastal defense, anti-surface operations, Maritime Security Operations (MSO) and Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO), surveillance and intelligence gathering, search and rescue, etc.
Egypt and Swiftships have already co-produced up to (26) CPC28 for the Egyptian Navy since 2010.
The Egyptian Navy operates around 30 Swiftships boats for the Egyptian Navy including mine hunters, survey vessels, and both steel and aluminum patrol boats.
Egypt and Swiftships are also promoting the 28-meter CPC to neighboring African countries within the joint co-production venture Egypt has been discussing with Swiftships to produce the 35-meters fast patrol vessel (FPV) locally at the Egyptian shipyards in Alexandria.
The collaboration began in the early 1980s when Swiftships delivered its first set of eight (8) 28m CPCs; later, in 1990, it delivered two (2) 54-meter Mine-Hunters (MH) under a Direct Commercial Sales (DCS) contract. In 2006, Swiftships further delivered six (6) 26-metre Fast Patrol Craft (FPC), and further in 2009, delivered two (2) 28-meter CPCs and co-produced four kits built in Egypt under Swiftships’ guidance.
Egypt has an established local defense and security industry that produces a range of products from small arms to armored vehicles and naval vessels. It has co-production agreements with several countries, including the United States and France. Egypt receives $ 1.3 billion annually in military aid from the United States. These funds are for acquiring U.S.-made defense and security articles through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program.
