Military Africa has uncovered the unnamed customer that purchased 40mm grenades from Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) in June this year.

In it’s usual business manner, RDM sold a number of it’s 40 mm Low Velocity High Explosive and High Explosive Dual Purpose ammunition to an Asian customer, but declined to mention the name or other relevant information regarding the business.

However, the customer for the 40mm high explosive grenade is Bangladesh. “With these [two] contracts, we are expanding our customer base in Asia,” says Jan-Patrick Helmsen, CEO Rheinmetall Denel Munition regarding the business.

Asian countries orders €25 million 40mm ammunition from Rheinmetall

Details regarding the business was made available to Military Africa from an insider source in the Bangladeshi Government.

RDM along with a local agent M/S. Tamsin Tech participated in a bid process (DGDP Tender No: 214.394.21) for 40X53mm HE grenade, and as the lowest bidder, the company got the order and signed the contract.

The contract entails the supply of 60,000 unit of 40mm high explosive grenade at approximately $3,471,075 equivalent to Bangladeshi BDT 298,512,450. The unit price was quoted at $53.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition offers a comprehensive range of high-quality 40mm ammunition, including. 40x46mm Low Velocity (LV), 40x53mm High Velocity (HV) and 40x51mm Medium Velocity (MV).

The 40mm MV ammunition has a range of up to 800 metres – 200 metres more than comparable products on the market. The 40mm LV ammunition has a range of up to 400 metres. Both types of ammunition use a High Explosive Dual Purpose projectile. This combines fragmentation and shaped charge, which has a high penetrating power. It can be used against bunkers and armoured targets and can penetrate 50 mm rolled homogenous armour (RHA).

RDM continues to enjoy steady export success for it’s ammunitions, in April, Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) signed a contract to supply 40 mm grenade ammunition to the Spanish military under a recently signed contract, with deliveries to begin this year, till 2026.

In the same way, the Hungarian Ministry of Defence contracted with Rheinmetall to supply an extensive package of ammunition worth several hundred million euros.

Two years ago, RDM secured a contract for 40 mm grenade and 76 mm naval gun ammunition from an international client.

That same year, RDM was awarded a contract to supply the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) with new 40 mm medium velocity ammunition for the newly purchased Y4 grenade launchers from Milkor, as part of Project Kamogelo.
