Today we will discuss why the Sudanese army main battle tanks continue to struggle in combat against the rapid support forces.The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces has highlighted significant challenges faced by the Sudanese military's main battle tanks. Despite operating a range of tanks, including the locally produced Al Zubair tanks, Chinese Type 59D tanks, Chinese Type 88 tanks, and Soviet-era T-54/55 tanks, the Sudanese Army has struggled to gain the upper hand. Here are some key reasons why: Number 1. Technological Disparity. The RSF has reportedly acquired advanced anti-tank weaponry, including modern anti-tank guided missiles and portable anti-tank rocket launchers. These weapons are highly effective against older tank models like the T-54/55 and even some of the more modern Chinese tanks. Number 2. Mobility and Terrain. The Sudanese Army's tanks, particularly the older T-55 models, suffer from limited mobility and are less suited to the rugged and urban terrains where much of the fighting occurs. The RSF, with its more agile and versatile forces, can exploit these weaknesses more effectively. Number 3. Firepower and Armor. While the Al Zubair tanks and Chinese Type 59D tanks are equipped with 105mm smoothbore guns, they may still fall short in terms of firepower and armor protection compared to more modern tanks. The RSF's anti-tank capabilities, combined with their knowledge of the local terrain, allow them to target and disable these tanks more efficiently. Number 4. Maintenance and Logistics. Maintaining and repairing tanks in a conflict zone is a significant challenge. The Sudanese Army's logistical capabilities may be strained, leading to operational issues with their tanks. The RSF, on the other hand, may have better access to maintenance resources and support. Number 5. Training and Tactics. Effective tank warfare requires well-trained crews and sophisticated tactics. The Sudanese Army's tank crews may not have received the same level of training and support as their adversaries, impacting their performance in combat. Jaguar is a twin-engine, ground-attack aircraft designed and developed jointly by Breguet of France (now part of Dassault) and the UK-based British Aircraft Corporation (BAC). The two companies formed a joint venture called SEPECAT to develop the aircraft. A total of 573 jaguars have been ordered globally, comprising 403 to France and the UK, 54 to Oman, Ecuador, Nigeria and 116 to India. Jaguar was retired from the air forces of France, the UK, Oman, Ecuador and Nigeria. The Jaguar has 23 variants including Jaguar A, B or T2, T2A, T2B, T4, E, S or GR1, GR1A, GR1B, GR3, GR3A, M, ES, EB, S(O), B(O), IS, IB, IM, SN, BN, Jaguar Active Control Technology and Jaguar International. The Jaguar A is a single-seat low-level attack aircraft deployed by the French Air Force (FAF). Its maiden flight took place in March 1969. Two prototypes and 160 production units were built. The Jaguar B is a two-seat trainer model built for the RAF. The variant completed first flight in August 1971. It can execute strike role and ground attack missions too. A total of 39 aircraft including one prototype were built. The Jaguar E is an improved trainer version equipped with two cockpit seats. A total of 41 aircraft including one prototype were developed for the FAF. The Jaguar S is a ground attack model built for the RAF. Its maiden flight took place in October 1969. It is incorporated with navigation and armament aiming sub-system, Adour Mk 104 propulsion, laser ranger and marked target seeker. The Jaguar M is a naval version principally deployed for maritime patrol missions. Deployed by the French Navy, the variant features reinforced airframe, an arrestor hook, and a unique landing gear with two nose wheels and a single main wheel. Breguet and BAC joined in 1966 to develop the Jaguar. The aircraft was initially developed as a jet trainer with light low-level attack capability but later its missions were upgraded to include supersonic, reconnaissance and tactical nuclear strike roles. Construction of the Jaguar was equally shared between the two companies, with BAC developing the wings, intakes, rear fuselage and tail, and Dassault building the nose, centre fuselage and landing gear. Dassault became a partner in the project by acquiring Breguet in 1971. The maiden flight took place in September 1968 and the aircraft entered service with France in 1973. The Jaguar was built to supersede the RAF’s McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR2. The French Army procured Jaguar to retire its obsolete fleet of Aeronavale’s Dassault Étendard IV. The Nigerian Air Force has a compliment of 21 MIG-21 and 19 Sepecat Jaguars that can on paper be activated within 365 days to provide air asset for Nigeria during a national emergency of existential proportion. In fact Nigeria’s war plan calls for such actions to be taken. If these aircraft’s in storage were in service, Nigeria will have the 4th biggest attack fleet in Africa. But are these decommissioned aircrafts in storage in conditions that allow making them airworthy possible? or are they just sitting there and awaiting their fates as museum relics. The Jaguars for example are kept in storage type facility. SEPECAT JAGUAR AIR/GROUND ATTACK The Sepecat Jauguar is the most advanced and only 4th generation fighter aircraft ever acquired by the Nigerian Air Force. Nigeria became the first and only African export customer of the Anglo-Franco built aircraft, aquiring two squadrons of the jets in the mid eighties. Typical weapons fitted included the Matra LR.F2 rocket pod, BAP 100-mm bombs, Martel AS.37 anti-radar missiles, AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, and Rockeye cluster bombs. The RAF's Jaguars gained several new weapons during the Gulf War, including CRV7 high-velocity rockets and American CBU-87 cluster bombs. However Nigeria’s efforts to acquire precision weaponry for the aircraft’s were frustrated by the French government, who accused Nigeria of having imperialistic and expansionist motives in the region. Nigeria’s small Jaguar force did not operate long. Despite being Africa’s most populous and one of its richest nation, unstable governments caused by corruption, repeated coups and counter coups and the resultant sanctions by the West left Nigeria unable to afford a safe level of operations, or to keep maintenance contract with BAE Systems going. By 1992 Nigeria had flown its last jaguar. The 16 surviving airframes have been basically derelect ever since and have passed the point of being flyable without millions of dollars in investments. Several attempts and feasibility studies on potentially making them airworthy were carried out in 2009 but the cost running into the hundreds of millions was deemed prohibitively too costly. In October 2011 the Jaguars were put up for auction but the level of endemic corruptuon in the country could hardly mark a purchase attempt an attractive proposition. #military #nigeria #militaryaircraft #jaguar
